Kolaborasi Projects | Excerpts from Above and Beyond

A performance event and workshop involving collaboration between American, British and Indonesian artists at the Teater Arena, Taman Budaya Surakarta (Cultural Centre of Central Java), Indonesia, 10 – 12 July 2007.

The performance event involved three pieces, the first two created and performed respectively by American and British artists, the last a collaboration between American and Indonesian artists.

Three Performative Works:
“Waiting for Richard”
Choreographed by American artist Sally E. Dean.  Music by Tobias Sturmer.  “Waiting for Richard” is a solo dance/theatre piece set in a time-less era, full of delicacy and constraint. A woman emerges as if from a painting. As she waits for Richard's arrival, hope is eaten. With time, beauty and sensuality disintegrate, transforming into the grotesque and violent.  A silent yet seductive nightmare.
"Dark Passing"
Choreographed by British artist Alex Crowe.  “Dark Passing”:  Under Stars far away, a being moves forward through time and space.  As it encounters an object, that is, perhaps, a mirror of itself, there is a transformation that changes times, changes space and leads to new directions.  “We Dream a performance onto stage, and it dreams us, and perhaps the people who see it, into a new awakening.”
“City Life"
Created by Sally E. Dean in collaboration with local Indonesian artists (Ni Kadek Yulia, Danang, Buana, Mahatma and other participants), as a culmination of dance/theatre workshop led by Sally E. Dean on July 10, 2007.

Dance Theater Workshop:
A Dance/Theatre Workshop:
“Internal and External Worlds of the Performer”
A performance event and workshop involving collaboration between American, British and Indonesian artists at the Teater Arena, Taman Budaya Surakarta (Cultural Centre of Central Java), Indonesia, 10 – 12 July 2007.

The performance event involved three pieces, the first two created and performed respectively by American and British artists, the last a collaboration between American and Indonesian artists.

The workshop, entitled "Internal and External Worlds of the Performer", led by Sally E. Dean on 10 July 2007, was designed to help performers to create their own work through new approaches to improvisation.  Some creative techniques focus on the performer's inner world, such as intention, imagination, and imagery others focus on the external world of objects, costumes and text.  In this workshop practised using both at the same time.  From the exploration in the workshop, the performance piece City Life was developed and shown at the performance event on 12 July.
